The Grails Scholars Program at Neighborhood Music School
In partnership with Neighborhood Music School, we’re proud to present the Grails Scholars Program.
This initiative—funded by the generous donations of our community through in-store round-ups and matched by contributions from our store’s owner-operator—provides need-based scholarships for young musicians to pursue formal training.
The Grails Scholars Program fully funds the DELTA Program’s Music Pathway for four students each year. This tuition-free program gives dedicated students the opportunity to explore artistic expression, develop technical proficiency on their instruments, and build the discipline and confidence that foster success both on and off the stage.
The program is open to students in grades 6–12 who attend New Haven Public Schools. Applicants must demonstrate financial need (household income of $75,000 or less) and a strong interest in music. Students apply by submitting an application; no audition is required.
Details of the Music Pathway
Students accepted as Grails Scholars receive a comprehensive music education, including:
Individual instruction: Thirty-two weekly, thirty-minute lessons on their primary instrument throughout the NMS academic year.
Increased lesson time: Scholars who successfully fulfill all program requirements are eligible to increase their weekly lessons by fifteen minutes, up to a maximum of ninety minutes.
Ensemble and class participation: Weekly ensemble rehearsals and regular music, dance, and/or theatre classes to foster community and collaborative skills.
Performance opportunities: Multiple chances to perform in recitals and concerts throughout the year. Scholars are encouraged to continue participating in an ensemble annually.
Summer program eligibility: An optional opportunity to receive up to eight weekly lessons during the summer and/or to participate in NMS’s Summer Jazz Program or Audubon Arts Summer Program, as well as one summer class in music, dance, or theatre.
It is our hope that the Grails Scholars Program will not only provide essential financial support but also cultivate a lifelong engagement with music. We are honored to support these young artists as they embark on their creative journeys and grow into the next generation of musicians and community leaders.
